Salvacoline is an anti-diarrhoeal medicine that works by reducing bowel movements and secretions, thereby reducing the number of liquid stools. It is therefore indicated for the treatment of the symptoms of acute non-specific diarrhoea.
It comes in a pack of 20 tablets.
Suitable for use in adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.
The recommended dosage varies according to the weight and age of the patient.
Adults: take 2 capsules as an initial dose, followed by 1 capsule after each bowel movement. Do not exceed a maximum of 8 capsules per day,
Over 12 years of age: start with 1 capsule and follow with 1 capsule after each bowel movement. The maximum number of capsules will depend on the patient's weight:
Child's weight Maximum number of capsules per day
From 27 kg onwards Maximum 4 capsules
From 34 kg onwards Maximum 5 capsules
40 kg and over Maximum 6 capsules
From 47 kg and above Maximum 7 capsules
Do not use Salvacoline:
In children under 12 years of age.
In case of allergy to loperamide or to any of the ingredients of this medicinal product.
If you have blood in your stools or high fever (above 38 ºC).
If you have acute ulcerative colitis.
If you have severe diarrhoea after taking antibiotics.
If you have diarrhoea due to an infection caused by organisms such as Salmonella, Shigella or Campylobacter.
Like all medicines, Salvacoline can cause side effects, although not everybody will get them. Such effects can be:
Frequent: constipation, nausea, gas (flatulence), headache and dizziness.
Infrequent: vomiting, dyspepsia, dry mouth, abdominal pain or discomfort, drowsiness and skin discolouration.
Rarely: intestinal paralysis, abdominal swelling, dilatation of the large intestine, loss or decrease in level of consciousness, stupor, exaggerated tension in the muscle tone (in the stomach).Exaggerated muscle tone (hypertonia), abnormal coordination, blistering of the skin, skin disorder resulting in lesions and intense itching (urticaria).severe allergic reactions such as swelling of the lips, face, throat or tongue which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing (angioedema) including anaphylactic shock, urinary retention, constriction of the pupils and tiredness.
The active substance in Salvacoline is loperamide. Specifically, each tablet contains 2 mg loperamide hydrochloride. The other ingredients are: mannitol (E-421), talc (E-553b), magnesium stearate (E-572), microcrystalline cellulose (E-460i), croscarmellose A, colloidal silica (E-551), iron oxide yellow (E-172).

In cases of diarrhoea it is very important to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
