Gaviscon is a sachet medicine for the symptomatic relief of hyperacidity and heartburn caused by acid reflux of the stomach.
It contains 12 sachets.
It is a medicine in oral suspension indicated for the treatment of gastric hyperacidity and heartburn caused by the reflux of acid that naturally originates in the stomach during the digestion process.
It has a pleasant mint flavour and comes in a 12-sachet pack .
Intended for use by adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.
Take 1 to 2 sachets a day, according to need, up to a maximum of 8 every 24 hours.
Administer preferably after meals and before bedtime.
If symptoms persist for more than 1 week, a doctor should be consulted for a clinical assessment by a professional.
Avoid drinking plenty of milk or dairy products while taking Gaviscon.
Special care should be taken in patients requiring a low sodium diet, and patients at renal risk, as continued use may increase the formation of kidney stones.
Its administration is contraindicated in patients at risk of kidney stone formation, hyperphosphatemia, hypercalciuria and renal insufficiency.
In pregnancy and lactation, no risks have been described, but prior medical assessment is always recommended.
Special care should be taken when taking other medicines, spacing the intake of medicines such as antibiotics (tetracyclines), digoxin, ketoconazole, propranolol and carvedilol, among others, at least two hours apart, as the plasma levels of these can be affected by increasing or decreasing and will interfere with the intended therapeutic effect.
Adverse reactions produced by Gaviscon are rare, although in prolonged treatment and associated with the intake of sodium alginate, sodium carbonate and sodium hydrogencarbonate, the following very low frequency adverse reactions have been described, such as yesAlkali milk syndrome, metabolic alkalosis, hypercalcaemia, respiratory symptoms (bronchospasm), anaphylactic reactions (urticaria) and constipation.
There is no significant risk for driving or operating machinery.
Each sachet of mint-flavoured Gaviscon contains calcium carbonate (160 mg), sodium alginate (500 mg) and calcium bicarbonate (267 mg) as active ingredients. The other formulation aids are methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), saccharin sodium, natural mint flavouring.
Gaviscon is a must when it comes to burning and heartburn after eating food. But do not forget that when these symptoms persist or worsen after more than a week, you should see a doctor, as they may mask any other type of ailment that we are not aware of.
Remember to take one sachet when the first symptoms appear after meals, not exceeding 8 sachets in a 24-hour period.
