It is a medicine belonging to the group of medicines known as antacids, which are those that reduce excess stomach acidity. It is therefore indicated for the symptomatic relief of heartburn and acidity in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over.

Who it is intended for
Formulated for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.
Dissolve the contents of the sachet in a glass of water and stir until completely dissolved. The recommended dose is 1 to 2 sachets (1 to 2 g of sodium hydrogencarbonate) per day.
If necessary, the dose may be repeated, increasing to 2 to 4 sachets (2 to 4 g of sodium hydrogencarbonate), after meals or if gastric discomfort is felt.
Do not exceed the maximum dose of 6 sachets per day. This medicine should be taken 20 minutes to 1 hour after meals. Always use the lowest dose that is effective.
As symptoms disappear, the medication should be discontinued.
Do not use Bicarbonate NM:
If you are allergic to sodium hydrogencarbonate.
If you suffer from metabolic or respiratory alkalosis.
If you suffer from hypocalcaemia
If you suffer from hypochlorhydria
If you are prone to oedema formation
If you have appendicitis or its symptoms (nausea, vomiting, cramps, abdominal pain).
If you have intestinal obstruction
If you are on a low sodium diet (if you have high blood pressure or heart or kidney problems).
If you have kidney or liver disease
Do not give to children under 12 years of age.
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or intend to become pregnant, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine.
Like all medicines, Bicarbonate NM may cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. Adverse reactions of unknown frequency have been observed in this case:
Flatulence, belching, vomiting, cramping, stomach bloating and rebound effect.
Hypokalaemia and hypernatraemia
If used continuously or at high doses may cause systemic alkalosis, hypertension and oedema.
When large amounts of milk are ingested it can produce a syndrom known as "milk and alkaline" producing hypercalcaemia (anorexia, vomiting, nausea, apathy, cramps).
The active substance of Bicarbonate NM is sodium hydrogencarbonate. Each sachet contains 1 g of sodium hydrogencarbonate. This medicine does not contain excipients.
Always wait until the contents of the sachet are completely dissolved and the bubbles have disappeared before taking the medicine.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have taken or may need to take any other medicines.
If symptoms do not improve within 7 days, stop treatment and seek medical advice.
