What is Strefen Honey Eucalyptus 16 lozenges and what is it for?

Strefen Honey Eucalyptus provides short-term symptomatic relief of sore throat pain.

Who is it intended for?

It is intended for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.

How to use: Dosage

The lowest dose that is effective for the shortest possible time should be administered to control symptoms.

  • Adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over: Dissolve or suck one lozenge slowly in the mouth every 3-6 hours as needed.
  • Maximum: 5 lozenges in a 24-hour period.
  • It is recommended to use this medicine for a maximum of 3 days.
  • Children: Not indicated for children under 12 years of age.
  • Elderly patients: General dosage cannot be recommended due to limited clinical experience. These patients are at increased risk of serious adverse effects.
  • Hepatic insufficiency: No dose reduction is required in patients with mild to moderate hepatic insufficiency. Flurbiprofen is contraindicated in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
  • Renal insufficiency: No dose reduction is required in patients with mild to moderate renal insufficiency. Flurbiprofen is contraindicated in patients with severe renal insufficiency.

Route of administration: How to take

By mouth, for short-term use only.

As with all lozenges, to avoid local irritation, Strefen should be kept in motion in the mouth while dissolving.

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in children under 12 years of age.
  • Known hypersensitivity to flurbiprofen or allergy to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
  • Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to acetylsalicylic acid or other NSAIDs, including those who have experienced asthma attacks, acute rhinitis, urticaria or angioneurotic oedema following the use of acetylsalicylic acid or other NSAIDs.
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding, active peptic ulcer.
  • Severe renal insufficiency (ClCr < 30 ml/min).
  • Severe hepatic insufficiency (Child-Pugh class C).
  • Severe heart failure.
  • Third trimester of pregnancy.

Pregnancy

Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis may adversely affect gestation and/or embryo development. Epidemiological study data indicate an increased risk of miscarriage, cardiac malformations and gastroschisis after taking prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors in early pregnancy. The absolute risk of cardiovascular malformations increased from less than 1% to approximately 1.5%. The risk appears to increase as a function of dose and duration of treatment.

Animal studies have shown that administration of prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors results in increased pre- and post-implantation fetal loss and embryofetal lethality. Additionally, an increased incidence of several malformations, including cardiovascular malformations, has been reported in animals administered a prostaglandin synthesis inhibitor during the period of organogenesis. During the first and second trimester of pregnancy, flurbiprofen should be avoided unless strictly necessary. If flurbiprofen is administered to a woman planning to conceive, or during the first and second trimester of pregnancy, the lowest dose that is effective for the shortest possible time should be administered.

During the third trimester of pregnancy, all prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors may expose the fetus to the following:

  • Renal and urinary: interstitial nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and renal failure.

Precautions

  • Renal insufficiency: Use contraindicated in severe renal insufficiency. NSAIDs may cause a decrease in renal blood flow, resulting in reversible acute renal failure due to inhibition of vasodilator prostaglandin synthesis. Nephrotic syndrome and acute interstitial nephritis have been reported with prolonged treatment. Patients at increased risk of renal failure are those with previous renal failure, the elderly, or those with conditions that may reduce renal flow, such as hypovolaemia, dehydration, low sodium diets, heart failure, liver failure, kidney failure.aca, liver failure, liver cirrhosis or treatment with diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) or angiotensin II receptor antagonists (ARBs). In high-risk patients, during prolonged treatment, it is recommended to monitor renal function (serum creatinine, CrCl) before starting treatment and periodically. In case of worsening renal function, a dose reduction may be necessary.
  • Hepatic insufficiency: Use in severe hepatic insufficiency is contraindicated.
  • Gastrointestinal toxicity: Treatment with NSAIDs has resulted in gastroduodenal ulcers, as well as bleeding and perforations that can be fatal. There is an increased risk of ulcers with high-dose or long-term treatment, in patients with a history of peptic ulcer, especially if they have already had gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation from NSAIDs, as well as in people with smoking, chronic alcoholism, or in elderly or debilitated patients. However, short-term treatment also carries risks.

Composition

  • Flurbiprofen (buccal) 8.75 milligrams
  • Benzyl alcohol (excipient) 0.00169 milligrams
  • Isomalt (E-953) (excipient) 2.034 mg
  • Maltitol (E-965) (excipient) 508,50 milligrams

Pharmaceutical advice

As a general rule, to reduce gastric damage, it is advisable to administer any NSAID with food. In addition, in at-risk groups it is recommended to start treatment with the lowest possible dose and, whenever feasible, to add an anti-ulcer drug (anti-H2 or proton pump inhibitor - PPI).
