What is Normotus Expectorant 2 mg/ml + 20 mg/ml and what is it for?

Medicine containing dextromethorphan hydrobromide which is an antitussive and guaifenesin which is an expectorant.

It is indicated for the relief of cough and to facilitate the expulsion of excess mucus and phlegm in colds and flus for adults and children from 6 years of age.

Who it is intended for

Suitable foruse in adults and adolescents aged 6 years and over.

Instructions for use

The recommended dose of Normotus Expectorant is:

  • Adults and adolescents from12 years of age: 5 ml or 10 ml, every 4-6 hours according to need. Maximum 60 ml / 24 hours.
  • Use in children

Children from 6 to 12 years of age: 2.5 ml or 5 ml every 4-6 hours according to need.Maximum 30 ml / 24 hours.

Serious adverse effects, including neurological disorders, may occur in children in case of overdose.Caregivers should not exceed the recommended dose.

Children 2-6 years: other presentations are more suitable for this population.Administer only under medical supervision due to the risk of paradoxical CNS stimulation effects.

Children under 2 years of age: contraindicated.

 

Contraindication s

Do not use Normotus Expectorant 2 mg/ml + 20 mg/ml:

  • Children under 2 years of age: contraindicated.
  • Children from 2 to 6 years of age: there are other presentations more suitable for this population. Administer only under medical supervision, due to the risk of paradoxical effects of CNS stimulation.

    Patients with liver disease: the dose should be reduced to half the recommended dose for each population, in no case exceeding 4 intakes per day.

    Serious adverse effects may occur in children in case of overdose, including neurological disorders. Caregivers should not exceed the recommended dose.

Side effects

Likeall medicines, Normotus Expectorant 2 mg/ml + 20 mg/ml may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

During the period of use of dextromethorphan and guaifenesin, the following side effects have been observed, the frequency of which could not be established with certainty:

  • In some cases there has been: drowsiness, dizziness, vertigo, constipation, gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, headache and itching of the skin (urticaria).

  • More rarely: mental confusion.

Precautions

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting to take Normotus Expectorant if you are a patient:

  • With liver disease.
  • With atopic dermatitis (inflammatory skin disease characterised by erythema, itching, oozing, crusting and scaling, starting in childhood in individuals with hereditary allergic predisposition).
  • If you are taking other medicines such as antidepressants or antipsychotics, Normotus Expectorant may interact with these medicines and you may experience changes in your mental state (eg. agitation, hallucinations, coma) and other effects such as body temperature above 38°C, increased heart rate, high blood pressure and exaggerated reflexes, muscle stiffness, lack of coordination and/or gastrointestinal symptoms (eg, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea).

Patients with persistent or chronic cough, such as that due to smoking or who are sedated, debilitated or bedridden should not take this medicine.

Compositio n

Each ml contains 2 mg dextromethorphan hydrobromide and 20 mg guaifenesin as the active substances.

The other ingredients (excipients) are: sodium benzoate (E-211), citric acid monohydrate, sorbitol (E-420), saccharin sodium, aspartame (E-951), povidone, orange flavouring (contains ethanol) and purified water.

Pharmaceutical advice

You should consult a doctor if you get worse or if you do not improve after 7 days of treatment.

How to take:

Measure the amount of medicine to be taken with the measuring cup that comes with the bottle. After use, wash the measuring cup.

It is recommended to drink a glass of water after each dose and plenty of fluids throughout the day. Can be taken with or without food.

Do not take with grapefruit or bitter orange juice or alcoholic drinks (see section "Taking Normotus Expectorant with food, drink and alcohol").

You should consult a doctor if you get worse, or if you also have a high fever, skin rash, persistent headache or if you do not improve after 7 days of treatment.
