What is Magnesia Seid and what is it for?

It is a medicine formulated with magnesium hydroxide, an active ingredient used to treat occasional constipation.

It comes in a handy pack containing 14 sachets.

Who is it for?

For adults and adolescents from 12 years of age.

Instructions for use

Take 1 sachet every morning, on an empty stomach. Simply pour the contents of the sachet into half a glass of water and stir before taking.

Do not exceed the maximum dose of 1 sachet per day and always take the lowest effective dose.

Contraindications

Do not use Magnesia Seid:

  • In children under 12 years of age.

  • In case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.

  • In cases of abdominal obstruction, appendicitis, severe renal failure, electrolyte imbalance, gastrointestinal or rectal bleeding, ulcerative colitis, colostomy, diverticulitis, ileostomy, chronic diarrhoea.

Precautions

  • Medical supervision in patients suffering from cardiac disease, hepatic insufficiency, debilitated or elderly patients.

  • Patients with hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI) should not take/receive this medicine, glucose or galactose absorption problems, or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not take this medicine.

  • Caution in concomitant intake of: Antidiabetics (chlorpropamide, glibenclamide, glipizide, tolbutamide), Dicoumarol, Levodopa, Sulphonamides, Atenolol, Folic acid, AnticolinéAnticholinergics or other drugs with anticholinergic activity, Quinolones (ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, pefloxacin, enoxacin), Histamine H2-receptor antagonists, Phosphates, Sulfonamides, Atenolol, Folic acidH2-histamine receptor antagonists, Oral phosphates, Iron salts, Tetracyclines (chlortetracycline, doxycycline, tetracycline, Digoxin, phenytoin, captopril, ketoconazole, ketoconazole, ketoconazole, ketoconazole, ketoconazole).na, captopril, ketoconazole, phenothiazines (especially oral chlorpromazine), penicillamine, indomethacin, chlordiazepoxide, alendronic acid and tiludronic acid. Consult a physician.

  • Consult a doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Magnesia Seid can cause side effects. In this case, the following have been reported: diarrhoea, abdominal pain and hypermagnesaemia (very rare).

Composition

The active substance in Magnesia Seid is magnesium hydroxide. Each sachet contains 2.4 g of magnesium hydroxide. The other ingredients are: microcrystalline cellulose, carmellose sodium, sodium cyclamate and lemon flavouring (containing maltodextrin, modified tapioca starch and butylated hydroxyanisole (E 320)).

Your pharmacist's opinion

It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids during treatment to facilitate the action of the medicine. Its laxative effect may appear 3-6 hours after ingestion, so do not take before bedtime.

Avoid chronic use. In cases of chronic constipation of non-organic origin, improvement can be achieved by following the following guidelines: a diet rich in fibre, adequate water intake, physical exercise and regulation of the habit of defecation.
