What is Magnesia San Pellegrino and what is it for?

It is a medicine in the form of sachets for oral solution used for the treatment of occasional constipation.

It comes in a handy pack containing 20 sachets.

Who it is for

Suitable for use in adults and adolescents from 12 years of age.

Directions for use

The recommended dosage of Magnesia San Pellegrino varies according to the needs of the patient:

  • As a laxative: take 1 sachet a day in a single dose, preferably in the morning, on an empty stomach.

  • As a purgative: take 2 to 3 sachets a day in a single dose or divided into 2 doses.

Contraindications

Do not use Magnesia San Pellegrino:

  • In children under 12 years of age.

  • In case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.

  • In cases of abdominal obstruction, appendicitis, severe renal failure, electrolyte imbalance, gastrointestinal or rectal bleeding, ulcerative colitis, colostomy, diverticulitis, ileostomy, chronic diarrhoea.

Precautions

  • Medical supervision in patients suffering from cardiac disease, hepatic insufficiency, debilitated or elderly patients.

  • Patients with hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI) should not take/receive this medicine, glucose or galactose absorption problems, or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not take this medicine.

  • Caution in concomitant intake of: Antidiabetics (chlorpropamide, glibenclamide, glipizide, tolbutamide), Dicoumarol, Levodopa, Sulphamides, Atenolol, Folic acid, AnticolinéAnticholinergics or other drugs with anticholinergic activity, Quinolones (ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, pefloxacin, enoxacin), Histamine H2-receptor antagonists, Phosphates, Sulfonamides, Atenol, Folic acidH2-histamine receptor antagonists, Oral phosphates, Iron salts, Tetracyclines (chlortetracycline, doxycycline, tetracycline, Digoxin, phenytoin, captopril, ketoconazole, ketoconazole, ketoconazole, ketoconazole, ketoconazole).na, captopril, ketoconazole, phenothiazines (especially oral chlorpromazine), penicillamine, indomethacin, chlordiazepoxide, alendronic acid and tiludronic acid. Consult a physician.

  • Consult a doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Magnesia San Pellegrino may cause side effects such as those described below: diarrhoea, abdominal pain and hypermagnesaemia (very rare).

Composition

The active substance in Magnesia San Pellegrino is magnesium hydroxide. Each sachet contains 3.6 g of magnesium hydroxide. As excipients: Sucrose (0.4 g per sachet), essence of aniseed.

It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids during treatment to facilitate its action.

Its laxative effect may appear 3-6 hours after ingestion, so do not take it before going to bed.

If symptoms persist or worsen after 7 days, seek medical advice.

Avoid chronic use. In cases of chronic constipation of non-organic origin, improvement can be achieved by following the following guidelines: a diet rich in fibre, adequate water intake, physical exercise and regulation of defecation habits.
