Fortasec 2 mg 12 Capsules

It is a medicine formulated with loperamide, an active ingredient used to control occasional acute diarrhoea.

Therefore, its action reduces intestinal movements and secretions, thus reducing liquid stools.

It comes in a pack of 12 capsules.

It is intended for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.

Follow exactly the instructions for use given in this leaflet or as directed by your pharmacist. If in doubt, ask your pharmacist.

• Adults: initially 2 capsules together and continue with one capsule after each bowel movement for a maximum of 8 capsules per day.

• Adolescents aged 12 to 18 years: initially one capsule and continue with one capsule after each bowel movement. In this case the maximum number of capsules depends on body weight:

Child's weight Maximum number of capsules per day

From 27 kg onwards Maximum 4 capsules

From 34 kg onwards Maximum 5 capsules

From 40 kg onwards Maximum 6 capsules

From 47 kg and above Maximum 7 capsules

• Do not use Fortasec capsules in case of: high fever, blood in the stool, ulcerative colitis, severe diarrhoea after antibiotics, diarrhoea caused by an infection (Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter).

• Like any medicine, it is contraindicated in people with allergy to its active ingredient or any of its excipients.

• Treatment should be discontinued promptly and a doctor should be consulted if constipation, abdominal bloating or absence of bowel movements occur.

• Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

• If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to certain sugars, consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

Like all medicines, Fortasec capsules may cause side effects, but this does not mean that everybody will experience them. Specifically, the following have been observed:

Frequency not known:

• Upper abdominal pain

• Abdominal pain radiating to the back

• Tenderness when touching the abdomen

• Fever

• Rapid pulse

• Nausea

• Vomiting

If any side effects occur, stop taking the medicine and consult your doctor.

Each Fortasec capsule contains 2 mg loperamide hydrochloride as the active substance. The other excipients are: Lactose, talc, magnesium stearate and maize starch. Gelatin, iron oxide yellow (E172), titanium dioxide (E171), indigotine (E132), erythrosine (E127) and iron oxide black (E172).

It is very important that you read the instructions for this medicine before taking it and always ask questions if you have any doubts.

They are grey and green hard gelatin capsules that do not require special storage conditions and should be taken whole with a glass of water and throughout the day drinking plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Do not take more tablets than recommended.
