It is a medicine in tablet form that is an additional iron and folic acid supplement used for the prevention of iron and folic acid deficiencies in pregnant women, as well as for the prevention of certain foetal disorders.
It comes in a pack containing 30 tablets.
The recommended dose is 1 tablet, 3 times a day.
Do not use Foliferron:
If you are allergic to iron, folic acid or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
If you have excess iron in your body (e.g. haemochromatosis, haemosiderosis).
If you have vitamin B12 deficiency (megaloblastic anaemia).
If you have had repeated blood transfusions.
If you are receiving simultaneous intravenous therapy with iron.
The use of Foliferron during pregnancy is safe as pregnancy can lead to iron and folic acid deficiency, and its use is recommended as a preventive measure.
The use of iron and folic acid, the two active ingredients in Foliferron, during lactation is safe, although folic acid is excreted in breast milk. This is also a physiological situation in which deficiency in the two nutrients can occur, so it is recommended as a preventive measure.
Like all medicines, Foliferron can cause side effects, which does not mean that everyone will experience them. In this case, the following has been observed:
The most frequent adverse effects are: abdominal pain, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhoea. Dark green or black stools are frequent, due to iron excretion. This effect is harmless.
Rare side effects: severe allergic reaction.
Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: flushing, itching/swelling (especially of the face, tongue or throat), dizziness and/or trouble breathing.
The active substances in Foliferron are folic acid and iron (in the form of iron fumarate). Each tablet contains 100 mg iron fumarate (equivalent to 32.8 mg iron) and 0.150 mg folic acid. The other ingredients are: sucrose, maize starch, carmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone K90, cetyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, colloidal silica, polyethylene glycol 3350, gum arabic, polyethylene glycol 3350, gum arabic, glycerol 3350, glycerol 3350, glycerol 3350, glycerol 3350, gum arabic.biga, polyethylene glycol 6000, basic tricalcium phosphate, gelatin, polyvinyl acetate, Eudragit E; talc, iron oxide reddish brown, iron oxide yellow (E-172), wax and water.

The tablets should be taken whole, with a little water or fruit juice (avoiding milk), preferably after meals.
