It is a medicine formulated with calcium carbonate, so it is used to treat and prevent calcium deficiency. It is also used as a supplement in the treatment of osteoporosis and as a chelator in hyperphosphatemia.
It comes in a handy pack containing 90 chewable tablets.
Suitable for both adult and paediatric populations.
Although the dosage should be determined by a doctor depending on the patient's pathology, the recommended dose is generally as follows:
Adults: take 500 to 1500 mg of calcium per day.
Children: take 500 to 1000 mg of calcium per day.
Do not use Mastical 500 mg:
In case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
In patients with kidney stones, diseases and/or situations giving rise to hypercalcaemia and/or hypercalciuria. Also in patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance.
In conjunction with thiazide diuretics.
Like all medicines, Mastical may cause side effects, although this does not mean that all people will experience them. In this case, the following have been observed:
Rare: hypercalcaemia, hypercalciuria, constipation, flatulence, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea.
Very rare: milk-alkali syndrome, pruritus, exanthema, urticaria.
The active substance inMastical is 1250 mg calcium carbonate, equivalent to 500 mg calcium. The other excipients are: Xylitol (E967), Povidone, Isomalt (E 953), Flavouring (orange), Magnesium stearate, Sucralose (E955), Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids.
The tablets of this medicine should be chewed or sucked, not swallowed directly.
In addition, the following should be considered before using this medicine:
If you are taking levothyroxine, you should separate from taking calcium for at least 4 hours.
If you are taking quinolones, you should take calcium 2 hours before or 6 hours after them.
Iron, zinc or strontium ranelate preparations should be taken at least 2 hours before or after calcium carbonate.
Tetracycline preparations should be taken at least two hours before or four to six hours after oral calcium intake.
