What is Gelocatil 650 mg tablets and what is it used for?

Gelocatil 650 mg is a medicine for use in febrile and painful conditions.

It comes in a handy pack of 12 tablets.

Who it is for

Suitable for use in adults and adolescents over 14 years of age.

Instructions for use

Take 1 tablet of Gelocatil 650 mg every 4-6 hours, without exceeding the maximum dose of 3 g/day. Preferably it can be taken without food in the stomach, as this increases absorption time.

Precautions

The dose should be reduced by 25 % in case of renal insufficiency. If glomerular filtration rate 10-15 ml/min 500 mg every 6 hours, if less than 10 ml/min 500 mg every 8 hours.

In hepatic insufficiency the maximum daily dose should be 2 g per day, spaced 8 hours apart.

In alcoholics, special care should be taken, always the maximum possible dose 2 g/day.

For sore throat, it should not be administered for more than 2 days without medical evaluation.

Contraindications

Do not use Gelocatil 650 mg tablets:

  • Should not be administered if hypersensitivity to paracetamol or any of the excipients, in hepatocellular disorders, or phenylketonuria.
  • Special care should be taken in patients with chronic alcoholism, renal failure, heart failure, pulmonary disorders and anaemia, among others.
  • No problems have been reported in pregnant women, although a doctor should always be consulted before use.
  • No problems have been reported in breast-feeding, although a doctor should always be consulted before use, as maximum concentrations of 10-15 microlitres/ml have been found in milk 2 hours after ingestion.
  • A doctor should be consulted if you are taking medicines such as chloramphenicol, propranolol, probenecid, oral anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, loop diuretics, loop diuretics, methoconazole, methotrexate, methotrexate and other drugs.The doctor should also be consulted if you are taking drugs such as chloramphenicol, propranolol, probenecid, oral anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, loop diuretics, metoclopramide, domperidone, rifampicin, lamotrigine, isoniazid, among others, as the plasma levels of these or of paracetamol may be affected, increasing or decreasing, causing toxicity or shielding the effect relatively.

Side effects

Gelocatil Tablets 650 mg may cause side effects, as with all medicines. In this case, the following have been observed: hypersensitivity reactions (urticaria, anaphylactic shock), general malaise, agranulocytosis, hypoglycaemia, increased transaminases, hepatotoxicity, cloudy urine, among others. It may also cause hypotension.

Composition

Each Gelocatil tablet contains 650 mg of paracetamol. The other excipients are: magnesium stearate, povidone, colloidal silica, anhydrous, sodium starch glycolate (Type A) (origin: potato) and starch, pregelatinised (origin: maize).

Advice from your pharmacist

In case of fever or pain, take 1 or more tablets of Gelocatil 650 mg per day as directed above.

If the fever lasts for more than 2 or 3 consecutive days, the treatment should be interrupted and a doctor should be consulted. If the pain persists for more than 5 days, treatment should be discontinued. In both cases, medical intervention and re-evaluation for treatment adjustment is required.
