What is Doxidine and what is it used for?

Doxidine is an antihistamine medicine formulated with doxylamine, an active substance that has sedative properties and is indicated for the treatment of occasional insomnia.

It is available as film-coated tablets in a pack of 14 tablets.

Who it is intended for

Suitable for use in adults over 18 years of age.

How to use

The recommended dose is 1 tablet (25 mg) a day, although if drowsiness appears during the day, it is advisable to reduce the dose to half a tablet (12.5 mg) a day, or to bring the dose forward to ensure that at least 8 hours elapse before waking time.

Do not take more than 1 tablet (25 mg) a day.

Contraindications

Do not use Doxidine:

  • In children under 18 years of age.

  • If you are allergic to doxylamine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

  • If you are allergic to other antihistamines (allergy medicines).

  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding and have not previously consulted a doctor.

Precautions

You should consult a doctor before taking this medicine if you have:

  • Impaired liver and kidney function.

  • Epilepsy.

  • Prolongation of the QT interval (a heart problem).

  • Low blood potassium levels or other electrolyte disturbances.

  • Heart disease and high blood pressure.

  • Asthma, chronic bronchitis (persistent inflammation of the bronchial tubes) and pulmonary emphysema (a disease that affects the lungs making it difficult to breathe).

  • Glaucoma (elevated eye pressure).

  • urinary retention

  • Prostatic hypertrophy (abnormal enlargement of the prostate).

  • Peptic ulcer (erosion of the stomach wall or beginning of the intestine), pyloroduodenal obstruction (difficulty passing food from the stomach to the intestine) and bladder neck obstruction (urinary tract disease).

Side effects

Like all medicines, Doxidine can cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. Generally, the side effects of doxylamine are mild and transient, being more frequent during the first few days of treatment.

  • Common : drowsiness and effects such as dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, urinary retention, increased bronchial secretion, vertigo, dizziness, headache, pain in the upper abdomen, fatigue, insomnia and nervousness.

  • Rare: asthenia (tiredness), peripheral oedema (swelling of arms and legs), nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, skin rash, tinnitus (noise in the ears), orthostatic hypotension (lowering of blood pressure due to a decrease in blood pressure).(lowering of blood pressure due to changes in posture), diplopia (double vision), dyspepsia (upset stomach), feeling of relaxation, nightmares and dyspnoea (breathing difficulties).

  • Rare: agitation (especially in children and the elderly), tremor, convulsions or blood problems such as haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia or agranulocytosis (decrease in certain blood cells).

  • Frequency not known: general malaise.

  • Other adverse effects that have occurred with the use of antihistamines in general, but have not been observed with doxylamine, include the following: arrhythmia (altered heart rate), palpitations, duodenogastric reflux, abnormal liver function (cholestatic jaundice), cholestatic QT interval (QT interval of the heart), heart palpitations, heart palpitations.(a heart disturbance), decreased appetite, increased appetite, myalgia (muscle pain), abnormal co-ordination, extrapyramidal disorder (an abnormal heart rhythm), abnormal heart function (cholestatic jaundice), prolonged electrocardiogram QT interval (a heart disturbance).abnormal coordination, extrapyramidal disorder (movement disorders), paraesthesia (abnormal sensations), impairment of psychomotor activities (sense-movement coordination), depression, decreased secretion of bronchial tubes (bronchial secretion of the bronchi), decreased blood flow, decreased blood flow in the lungs, decreased blood flow to the lungs, decreased blood flow to the brain, decreased blood flow to the lungs.The frequency and magnitude of the drugs can vary depending on the severity and severity of the symptoms.

The frequency and magnitude of adverse effects may be reduced by lowering the daily dose.

People over 65 years of age are at an increased risk of adverse reactions, as they may have other medical conditions or may be taking other medicines at the same time. They are also at an increased risk of falling.

Composition

Each tablet contains 25 mg doxylamine hydrogensuccinate. The excipients in the core are: Mannitol (E-421), Microcrystalline cellulose (PH-101), Sodium starch glycolate (type A), Colloidal anhydrous silica (E-551), Magnesium stearate (E-572). As for the excipients of the coating: Hypromellose 5mPas (E-464), Titanium dioxide (E-171), Macrogol 400 (E-1521), Indigotine (E-132).

Pharmaceutical advice

This medicine comes in the form of blue tablets, which are easily taken in a single dose at the end of each day, about half an hour before going to bed. As they are slotted, they can be easily broken up if only half a dose is needed.

A healthy diet low in saturated fat and rich in fibre, plenty of hydration, exercise and adequate rest each day are recommended.
