What is Locetar medicated nail varnish and what is it used for?

It is a medicine formulated with amorolfine as the active ingredient, which belongs to a group of medicines known as antifungals. It is therefore indicated for the treatment of fungal nail infections of mild to moderate severity in adults.

It comes in a convenient 5 ml bottle.

Who it is intended for

For use in adults only, unless prescribed by a doctor. Not for use during pregnancy and lactation, unless advised by a doctor.

Instructions for use

Apply the solution once or twice a week, only on the affected fingernails or toenails. Do not apply to the skin around the nails.

Try to associate the use of the medical varnish with a hygiene habit, on 1 day of the week of your choice, and maintain this routine during the treatment.

The required duration of treatment will basically depend on the severity and location of the infection. Generally, it will be 6 months for fingernails and 9 to 12 months for toenails. If after 3 months there is no improvement, consult a doctor.

Contraindications

Do not use Locetar Medicated Nail Varnish if you are allergic to amorolfine or any of the other excipients.

Do not use artificial nails during treatment. After applying Locetar, an interval of at least 10 minutes should be observed before the application of any cosmetic nail polish. Before reapplying Locetar, the cosmetic nail polish should be carefully removed beforehand.

Side effects

Locetar medicated nail varnish may cause side effects, as is the case with all medicines on the market. Specifically, the following have been observed:

  • Rare: nail changes, nail discolouration, nail breakage and brittle nails. These reactions may also be related to the onychomycosis itself.

  • Very rare: Burning sensation of the skin.

  • Frequency not known: Systemic allergic reaction (a serious allergic reaction that may be associated with swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing and/or severe rash), erythema, itching, contact dermatitis, urticaria and blistering.

Composition

The active substance of Locetar drug varnish is amorolfine. Each millilitre of solution contains 50 milligrams of amorolfine. As excipients: methacrylic acid copolymer, triacetin, butyl acetate, ethyl acetate and 96 % ethanol.

Pharmaceutical advice

This medicinal product is supplied in an amber glass bottle with a polypropylene (HDPE) cap containing 5 ml of solution. It also includes 30 cleansing wipes in individual sachets, 10 disposable spatulas and 30 files.

A mild to moderate fungal infection, without involvement of the nail matrix (lunula), is considered to be one in which there is discolouration of the nail (white, yellow or brown) and thickening, although the appearance may vary considerably.

Healthy nails should never be filed with the file used for diseased nails. Fungal infections are contagious. To prevent infection, do not let anyone else use the file.
