What is Fenivir and what is it used for?

Fenivir is a topical medicine formulated with penciclovir, an active ingredient that belongs to the group of medicines called antivirals, which stop the multiplication of viruses such as the one caused by cold sores. It is therefore used to treat cold sores (herpes labialis) , reducing pain and speeding up healing.

It comes in a small 2 g tube.

Who it is intended for

Suitable for use in adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.

Instructions for use

Use the cream as soon as possible, as soon as the first symptoms appear (itching and tingling). However, the cream can also be applied when the fever has already appeared.

Apply every 2 hours (approximately 8 times a day) for 4 consecutive days.

If symptoms persist or worsen at any time or if you do not notice any improvement after 4 days of treatment you should consult your doctor.

Contraindications

Do not use Fenivir:

  • In children under 12 years of age.

  • If you are allergic to penciclovir, famciclovir or any of the other ingredients of Fenivir.

  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding and have not previously consulted a doctor.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Fenivir can cause side effects. This does not mean that everyone will experience side effects.

In this case, side effects are usually mild and usually disappear quickly. Other side effects include allergic reactions such as allergic dermatitis, rash, urticaria, itching, and oedema.

Composition

The active substance in Fenivir is penciclovir. Each gram of Fenivir contains 10 mg of penciclovir. The other ingredients are: white soft paraffin, liquid paraffin, ketostearyl alcohol, propylene glycol, ketomacrogol 1000 and purified water.

Pharmaceutical advice

Fenivir should be used on cold sores on the lips or around the mouth. It is not to be used on mucous membranes (inside the mouth, nose or genital areas).

Remember that cold sores are contagious. To avoid infecting other parts of the body with the virus as well as spreading it to others, it is important that when you have a cold sore:

  • Avoid kissing, especially children.

  • Avoid oral sex.

  • Use your own towels and napkins and don't share cutlery, glasses, cups, etc.

  • Avoid breaking blisters or touching wounds, as this will prolong healing time.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, as the virus can cause a very serious condition if it reaches the eye.
