What is Hemoal and what is it for?

Hemoal is a medicated rectal ointment that has local anaesthetic and vasoconstrictive properties and is used to relieve the symptoms of haemorrhoids such as pain, itching or tingling.

It comes in a convenient 50g tube pack.

Who it is for

Suitable for use in adults over 18 years of age.

In frail patients over 65 years of age, a reduction in dosage may be necessary.

Instructions for use

First wash the area with soap and water and dry without rubbing. Then apply a small amount of Hemoal ointment in the morning and evening and after each bowel movement. The usual dose is 3-4 times a day.

If used with the cannula, carefully insert the anus and gently squeeze the tube of cream.

If symptoms do not improve after 7 days or if symptoms worsen, consult your doctor.

Contraindications

Do not use Hemoal Ointment:

  • If you are allergic to any component of this medicine or to any of its derivatives.
  • If you are allergic to commercial hair dyes.
  • If you are allergic to local anaesthetics
  • If you are receiving medication for Alzheimer's disease
  • If you are receiving sympathomimetic medication
  • If you have severe coronary or cardiovascular disease.
  • If you have high blood pressure
  • If you have hyperthyroidism
  • If you are currently being treated for or have received medication for depression in the last two weeks, such as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)
  • Large areas of skin, eczema, sunburn, infection or chapped skin.

Precautions

  • Use with caution in patients with diabetes, angle-closure glaucoma, Raynaud's phenomenon and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

  • You should not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Can Hemoal be used in pregnancy?

You should not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, unless expressly recommended by your doctor, as there is a possibility of absorption.

Side effects

Hemoal Rectal Ointment may cause side effects, as with all medicines. Specifically, the following have been observed.

  • Rare side effects: reduced blood flow to the area where the ointment is applied (ischaemia).
  • Very rare side effects: hypersensitivity reactions, anxiety, headache, nervousness, insomnia, palpitations.
  • Adverse effects of unknown frequency: increase in blood methaemoglobin leading to blue colouring of skin and mucous membranes (cyanosis), decreased appetite, hypokalaemia, confusion, depression, psychotic states, fear.psychotic states, fear, irritability, restlessness, tremor, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmia, angina-like pain, bradycardia, cardiac arrest, hypertension, cerebral haemorrhage, cerebral haemorrhage, cerebral hemorrhage, hypertension.hypertension, hypotension, fluid accumulation in lungs (pulmonary oedema), nausea, vomiting, excessive saliva, urinary retention, weakness, increased urinary tract pressure, increased urine secretion, increased urine secretion.urinary retention, weakness, increased sweating, changes in blood sugar levels, allergic contact reaction, burning sensation in the anus.

Composition

Each gram of Hemoal Rectal Ointment contains 30 mg benzocaine and 2 mg ephedrine (hydrochloride). The other ingredients (excipients) are: zinc oxide, white petrolatum and acetylated lanolin alcohol.

Pharmaceutical advice

It is very important to maintain good hygiene before and after each use. Avoid using the cannula with more than one patient, even if the cannula is washed to avoid infection.

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables, adequate fluid intake and regular exercise can help to treat haemorrhoids.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken other medicines, as Hemoal cream may interact with many medicines.
