What is Tarmed shampoo and what is it for?

It is a medicinal shampoo whose active ingredient is coaltar, which helps to reduce excessive scalp desquamation. Therefore, its use is indicated for scalp desquamation disorders, such as the relief of itching and desquamation of the skin in psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff.

Comes in a convenient 150 ml bottle.

Who it is for

Suitable for use by adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.

There are no studies during pregnancy and lactation, but it is contraindicated in the first trimester of pregnancy. In all other cases, consult your doctor.

Instructions for use

Use Tarmed shampoo on the scalp once or twice a week, rinsing with plenty of water after use.

The usual duration of treatment is 4 weeks, after which time improvement should be observed. If a longer treatment is necessary, it should be carried out under medical supervision.

Contraindications

Do not use Tarmed shampoo:

  • In children under 12 years of age.

  • If you are allergic to coaltar (coal tar) or to any of the excipients.

Do not use if you have any of the following skin problems:- active, inflamed psoriasis or eczema with fluid discharge, pustular psoriasis, photosensitivity, inflammation of hair follicles or acne vulgaris.

Side effects

Tarmed shampoo may cause side effects, as with all medicines on the market, but this does not mean that everyone will suffer from them.

  • Rare: Severe allergic reactions, itchy rash, swelling of the face or mouth and difficulty breathing.

  • Other side effects: eye irritation, unusual hair loss or thinning, dermatitis, changes in hair colour, abnormal hair texture, sensitivity to sunlight, skin irritation with possible dryness, redness, itching or even burning of the skin and skin pain, rash or inflammation at the application site.

  • Frequency not known: inflammation of hair follicles, generalised pustular psoriasis and altered varicose status.

Composition

The active substance of Tarmed is coaltar. Each gram contains 40 mg coaltar solution (4%). The other excipients are: sodium lauryl ether sulphate 70%, cocamidopropyl betaine, disodium hydrogen phosphate, citric acid monohydrate, benzyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol (PEG) 150 distearate, hexylene glycol, oleic alcohol, polyquaternium-10, fragrance AF17050 and purified water.

Pharmaceutical advice

Tarmed is a viscous, homogeneous, brownish, viscous shampoo with a strong characteristic odour in 150 ml bottles.

The shampoo should be used in two applications for best results. The time it should be in contact with the scalp should be about 3-5 minutes in between.

Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. In case of accidental contact, rinse with plenty of water.

Tarmed may temporarily stain light hair, skin and clothing.
