What is Levonorgestrel Sandoz and what is it used for?

It is an emergency contraceptive medicine formulated with a synthetic hormone called levonorgestrel, which prevents about 84% of unwanted pregnancies by stopping the ovaries from releasing an egg and preventing sperm from fertilising it if it has already been released.

To be effective, it must be taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex.

Instructions for use

Take one tablet with a little water as soon as possible, up to a maximum of 72 hours, after unprotected sex. Do not delay taking, as the sooner you take the medicine, the more effective it will be. You can take it at any time during your menstrual cycle except if you are already pregnant or think you may be pregnant, as Levonorgestrel does not interrupt pregnancy.

Contraindications

Do not take Levonorgestrel Sandoz :

- If you are allergic to levonorgestrel or any of the other ingredients in this medicine.

- If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.

- You have Crohn's disease or severe liver problems.

- You have a family history of salpingitis or ectopic pregnancy.

Side effects

Levonorgestrel can cause side effects, as with all medicines, but not everybody gets them. These are:

- Very common: nausea, headache, tiredness, pain in the lower abdomen, irregular bleeding (until the next menstruation).

- Frequent: vomiting, changes in menstruation, diarrhoea, increased breast tenderness.

- Very rare: itching, hives, pelvic pain, painful menstruation, swelling of the face, rash.

Composition

Each tablet contains 1.5 mg levonorgestrel as the main active substance. The other excipients are: microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, poloxamer 188, croscarmellose sodium and magnesium stearate.

Pharmaceutical Opinion

Levonorgestrel Sandoz is an emergency contraceptive medicine, commonly known as the morning-after pill. It comes in the form of a white tablet to be taken orally, within 72 hours of sexual intercourse. This is not a conventional method of contraception and will not be effective if pregnancy has occurred.

To ensure efficacy, it is important not to vomit within three hours of taking it.
