What is Kallya 1.5 mg, 1 tablet and what is it for?

It is an emergencycontraceptive that can be used within 72 hours after unprotected sex or if the contraceptive method used fails.

Who is it for ?

It is not recommended for girls who have not yet had their first menstrual bleeding.

Instructions for use

It is advisable to take the whole tablet with a littlewater, without chewing, within 72 hours.

Contraindication s

If you are allergic to levonorgestrel or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Side effects

Very common (may affect more than 1 in 10 people):

  • Nause a

  • Irregular bleeding until the next menstrual period

Frequent (may affect up to 1 in 10 people):

  • Vomiting. If you are vomiting, read the section "What to do if you are vomiting".

  • Your period may be different. Most women will have a normal period at the expected time, but some may have a period later or earlier than normal. You may also have irregular bleeding or spotting until your next period. If your period is more than 5 days late or exceptionally scanty or heavy, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible.

  • Increased breast tenderness, diarrhea, or dizziness after taking this medicine.

Very rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people):

  • Rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face, pelvic pain, painful menstruation.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking this medicine.

If any of the following apply to you, tell your doctor before taking this medicine as emergency contraception may not be suitable for you. Your doctor may prescribe another type of emergency contraception.

If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. This medicine will not work if you are already pregnant. If you are already pregnant, this medicine will not stop the pregnancy, so this medicine is not an 'abortion pill'.

You may already be pregnant if:

  • your period is more than 5 days late, or if you have abnormal bleeding when your next period is due;

  • you have had unprotected sex more than 72 hours after your last menstrual period.

This medicine is not recommended if you have:

  • you have a disease of the small intestine (such as Crohn's disease) that inhibits the absorption of the drug;

  • you have severe liver problems;

  • have a history of ectopic pregnancy (when the fertilised egg implants outside the uterus);

  • a history of salpingitis (inflammation of the fallopian tubes).

A previous ectopic pregnancy or fallopian tube infection increases the risk of a new ectopic pregnancy.

In all women, emergency contraception should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex. There is some evidence that this medicine may be less effective with increasing weight or bodymass index (BMI), but these data were limited and inconclusive. Therefore, this medicine is recommended for all women, regardless of weight or BMI.

You are advised to consult a health care professional if you are concerned about any problems related to emergency contraception.

Compositio n

The active substance is levonorgestrel. Each tablet contains 1.5 mg levonorgestrel.

The other ingredients are: microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, polaxamer 188, croscarmellose sodium and magnesium stearate.

Pharmaceutical advice

If you vomit within three hours of taking a tablet, you should take another tablet immediately.

It is not recommended to use this method of contraception on a regular basis. Only in case of extreme necessity .

It should also be noted that this method does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

If you have unprotected sex again during the same menstrual cycle, this tablet will not protect you.
