Whatis Nicotinell Mint 2 mg and what is it used for?

It is a medicine in tablet form containing nicotine for the treatment of withdrawal symptoms that occur when trying to quit smoking. Its use helps to achieve a progressive reduction in smoking in smokers who are motivated to quit .

Who itis intended for

Nicotinell Mint 2 mg lozengesare recommended for smokers with low to moderate nicotine dependence.

It is not recommended for smokers with strong or very strong nicotine dependence, for whom other more suitable doses are available.

Directions for use

The optimal dose is selected according to the table below:

The starting dose should be individualised according to the patient's nicotine dependence.

One lozenge should be taken when the patient feels the urge to smoke.

Initially, 1 lozenge should be taken every 1-2 hours. The normal dosage is 8 to 12 lozenges per day. The maximum dosage, for smoking cessation or to progressively reduce smoking using Nicotinell lozenges, is 24 lozenges per day.Do not take more than one lozenge per hour.

Treatment should be stopped when the dose has been reduced to 1 or 2 lo zenges per day. Nicotine medicines such as Nicotinell Mint 2 mg lo zenges are not normally recommended for use for more than 6 months. Some ex-smokers may need a longer treatment with the lozenge to avoid returning to smoking.

Contraindications

Do not use Nicotinell Mint 2 mg lozenges:

  • If you are a non-smoker.
  • If you are allergic to nicotine or to any of the ingredients of this medicine.

Side effects

As with all medicines, Nicotinell Mint 2 mg lozenges may cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. In this case, some of the effects you may notice during the first few days are dizziness, headache and sleep disturbances, which can be attributed to the symptoms associated with quitting smoking, and may sometimes be due to insufficient nicotine administration.Other possible withdrawal symptoms related to smoking cessation may include insomnia, cough, weakness, tiredness, feeling unwell and flu-like symptoms.

Other side effects are as follows:

  • Very common: feeling sick (nausea).
  • Frequent: inflammation of the mucous membrane of the mouth, oral discomfort, sore throat, vomiting, stomach upset, stomach pain, diarrhoea, indigestion/heartburn (sucking the tablet more slowly usually solves these problems), flatulence, hiccups, constipation, headache and dizziness, cough, dry mouth.
  • Rare: palpitations.
  • Rare: heart rhythm disturbances and allergic reactions, hypersensitivity reactions.
  • Unknown frequency: urticaria, ulcerative stomatitis, tremor, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, belching, increased secretion of saliva, weakness, tiredness, feeling unwell and flu-like symptoms.

Composition

Each Nicotinell Mint 2 mg lozenge contains 2 mg nicotine (corresponding to 3.072 mg nicotine bitartrate dihydrate). The other excipients are: maltitol (E965), anhydrous sodium carbonate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, polyacrylate, xanthan gum, anhydrous colloidal silica, levomenthol, peppermint essential oil, aspartame (E951) and magnesium stearate.

Pharmaceutical advice

This treatment should be continued for a minimum of 3 months. After 3 months, the user should gradually reduce the number of sucking tablets.
