What is Nicorette Ice Mint gum and what is it used for?

It is a medicine in the form of a medicated chewing gum with an intense mint flavour that is used for the relief of nicotine withdrawal symptoms when quitting smoking.

It comes in a convenient pack of 105 chewing gums.

 

Who it is for

Suitable for use by smokers over the age of 18 who want to quit.

How to use

Only use one chewing gum at a time and do not use another for 1 to 2 hours. Generally, 8 to 12 chewing gums are used per day, without exceeding the daily maximum of 24 chewing gums.

The duration of the treatment will depend on the needs of each smoker, and it is not advisable to stop the treatment abruptly, as this could encourage a return to tobacco addiction. It is preferable to reduce the dose gradually. The treatment should not be abandoned definitively until the dose is stabilised at 1 or 2 chewing gums a day.

Regular use of the chewing gum for more than 6 months is not recommended.

Contraindications

Do not use Nicorette Ice Mint 4 mg chewing gum:

  • In patients with allergy to nicotine or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
  • If you are a non-smoker.
  • If you suffer from jaw joint disorders.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Nicorette chewing gum may cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. In this case, the following have been observed:

  • Adverse effects similar to those associated with nicotine and usually depend on the amount of gum used.
  • Effects related to smoking cessation: Irritability, aggressiveness, impatience or frustration,feelings of anxiety, agitation or difficulty in concentrating,sleep disturbances, increased appetite or appetite problems.Effects related to smoking cessation: Irritability, aggressiveness, impatience or frustration, feelings of anxiety, agitation or difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances,increased appetite or weight gain,depression,cravings,decreased heart rate,bleeding gums, dizzinessor slight disorientation,cough, sore throat, nasal congestion or mucus.

Most adverse effects occur during the first few weeks of starting treatment.

Precautions

If you suffer or have suffered from any of the following diseases, you should try to stop smoking without using any medicine. If you do not succeed, you should consult your doctor for further treatment.

  • If you have recently (up to 3 months ago) suffered a heart attack or stroke.
  • If you suffer from chest pain (angina pectoris) or angina at rest. If you have a heart condition that affects your heart rate or rhythm.
  • If you have high blood pressure (hypertension) that is not controlled by medication.
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction with swelling of the lips, face and throat (angioedema) or skin irritation (urticaria). The use of nicotine replacement therapy can sometimes cause this type of reaction .
  • If you have severe or moderate liver disease.
  • If you have severe kidney disease
  • If yousuffer from diabetes.
  • If you havean overactive thyroid gland.
  • if you havea tumour in the adrenal medulla (pheochromocytoma).
  • If youhave a stomach or duodenal ulcer.
  • If you have oesophagitis.

Each chewing gum Nicorette Ice Mint contains 4 mg nicotine (corresponding to 20 mg of 20%resin complex)Each chewing gum contains 579.5 mg xylitol (E-967), 0.886 mg butylated hydroxytoluene (E-321), 13.03 mg sodium (as anhydrous sodium carbonate) and 0.39 mg potassium (as acesulfame potassium (E-950 ) .

Pharmaceutical advice

Chewing gum may stick and in rare cases may damage dentures and dental bridges. To improve the chance of success in quitting smoking, you should not smoke at all when starting this treatment.

Nicorette Ice Mint comes in two dosages: 2 and 4 mg. The appropriate dose depends on your previous smoking habits .

  • You should take Nicorette 4 mg if: youare a smoker with high or very high nicotine dependence, youhave not been able to quit smoking before using Nicorette 2 mg, or the symptoms of quitting smoking are so severe that you relapse.
  • In any other case, you should use Nicorette 2 mg.
