This reaction is part of the normal effect of the preparation and usually subsides within a short time after removal of the dressing.
However, the following rare side effects, which may affect up to 1 in 1000 people, have been reported: hypersensitive (allergic) skin reactions with redness, itching and blistering at the application site. If this occurs, the dressing should be removed and treatment discontinued.
Each Sor Virginia medical adhesive dressing contains 86.4 mg cayenne pepper extract (Capsicum frutescens), corresponding to 1.9 mg capsaicin per dressing.
The other excipients: rosemary essential oil, lavender essential oil, sweet almond oil, acrylic ester/acrylonitrile copolymer and vinyl pyrrolidone copolymer. The carrier material is a polyester and cellulose fabric and the cover is a silicone paper.
To remove the dressing, lift one corner and carefully peel it off. After handling, wash hands with soap and water.
Any residue that may remain on the skin after removal of the dressing can be removed with vegetable oil, moisturising cream or cold water.
