Iodine is a topical medicine formulated with povidone iodine, an active ingredient used as a skin antiseptic for general use to treat small wounds and superficial cuts, minor burns or grazes.
It comes in a small 40 ml bottle.
Intended for use on adults and children over 1 month of age.
During pregnancy and breast-feeding, the doctor's instructions should be strictly followed as its use could cause transitory hypothyroidism in both foetuses and newborns.
Before applying this product, wash and dry the affected area, repeating the process 2 to 3 times a day.
Do not ingest and avoid contact with eyes, ears and other mucous membranes. Consult your doctor if symptoms persist or worsen.
Do not use Iodine 10% topical solution:
In newborns aged 0 to 1 month.
If allergic to povidone iodine or any of the excipients.
If you have hyperthyroidism or other acute thyroid diseases.
Iodine can cause side effects, as with all medicines. In this case, the following have been observed:
Rare: hypersensitivity and contact dermatitis manifesting as red skin, small blisters and itching, in such cases discontinue treatment and wash the affected area.
Very rare: anaphylactic reactions, hyperthyroidism with tachycardia and agitation, and angioedema.
Unknown frequency: hypothyroidism, electrolyte imbalance, metabolic acidosis, acute renal failure, abnormal blood osmolarity, exfoliative dermatitis, dry skin and chemical skin burn.
The active substance of Iodine is povidone iodine. Specifically, each ml of solution contains 100 mg of povidone iodine. The excipients are: glycerol (E-422), polyoxyethylene alkyl ether, disodium phosphate, citric acid, sodium hydroxide and purified water, q.s.
Particular caution should be exercised in the handling of this medicinal product, as accidental spillage may cause irreversible damage to clothing and surfaces. In addition, it may interact with diagnostic tests leading to errors in tolvidin or guaiacol tests for haemoglobin or glucose in stool or urine. It may also interfere with thyroid tests and radioactive iodine treatments.
