What is Betatul and what is it used for?

Betatul is an antiseptic medicine whose active ingredient is povidone iodine, which comes in the form of impregnated dressings.

It is indicated for use as a general-purpose skin antiseptic for small wounds and superficial cuts, minor burns or grazes.

Who it is intended for

Intended for use on adults and children, except neonates (0-1 month).

In pregnancy and lactation, use only under medical prescription and for as short a time as possible. Its use could cause transient hypothyroidism in foetuses and newborns.

Instructions for use

Use only on the skin.

It is advisable to first wash and dry the affected area before applying the product. Then use the dressing and secure with a bandage. Change daily or every 2 days, depending on the need and doctor's indications.

Contraindications

  • Do not use Betatul if you are allergic to povidone iodine or to any of the excipients.

  • It is also not recommended for use if you have hyperthyroidism or other acute thyroid diseases.

Side effects

Betatul Dressing may cause side effects, as with all medicines, but this does not mean that everyone will experience them.

  • Rare side effects (may affect 1 to 10 in 10,000 people): hypersensitivity and contact dermatitis.

  • Very rare adverse effects (may affect less than 1 in 10,000 people): anaphylactic reactions, hyperthyroidism with tachycardia and agitation and angioedema.

  • Adverse effects of unknown frequency: hypothyroidism, electrolyte imbalance, metabolic acidosis, acute renal failure, abnormal blood osmolarity, exfoliative dermatitis, dry skin and chemical skin burn.

Composition

The active ingredient of Betatul is povidone iodine. Each 10 x 10 cm gel-impregnated dressing contains 250 mg povidone iodine. The other excipients are: polyethylene glycol 400, polyethylene glycol 4000, polyethylene glycol 6000, purified water and hydrophilic gauze.

This medicine comes in a pack of 10 impregnated dressings in individual sachets.

Do not swallow. Avoid contact with eyes, ears and other mucous membranes. Consult your doctor if symptoms persist or worsen. Widely used in burns.

Thyroid function tests should be performed in case of prolonged use.
