Benzac wash gel is a medicine whose active ingredient, benzoyl peroxide, acts as an antimicrobial agent that softens and peels the outermost layer of the skin.
It is used for washing and treating skin with moderate acne vulgaris.
Benzac is indicated for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.
During pregnancy and breast-feeding it is not indicated for use unless prescribed by a doctor.
Apply 1 or 2 times a day on the affected areas. It is particularly suitable for larger areas of the body (back and chest).
Pre-moisten the skin of the area to be treated and wash the area to be treated with the gel for 1 to 5 minutes.
Do not use Benzac wash gel if you are allergic to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
Caution should be exercised when applying to sensitive skin and avoid getting into the eyes, mouth or nostrils and other sensitive areas of the body and should not be used on damaged skin.
Adverse reactions occur at the site of application. They are usually reversible by reducing the frequency of application or discontinuing treatment.
Very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people):- Skin dryness, peeling, burning sensation and redness of the skin.
Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people): Skin irritation, pain and itching.
Rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people): Allergic contact dermatitis.
Adverse effects of unknown frequency (frequency cannot be known from available information): swelling of the face, allergic reactions including application site hypersensitivity and anaphylaxis, photosensitivity reaction.
The active substance is benzoyl peroxide. Each gram of Benzac wash gel contains 50 mg of benzoyl peroxide. The other excipients are: acrylate copolymer, glycerol, carbomer 940, sodium C14 - C16 olefin sulphonate, sodium hydroxide and purified water.
Benzac wash gel is a white to off-white gel. At the beginning of the treatment a slight burning may occur at the first application and after a few days moderate redness and peeling of the skin may occur. It is normal for peeling to occur during the first few weeks of treatment; this effect is not harmful and usually disappears within 1 or 2 days after temporary cessation of treatment. Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.
