It is specifically indicated for cats with diabetes mellitus and to stabilise weight after a period of weight loss. Although diabetes mellitus may be reversible in cats, lifelong dietary management minimises the risk of recurrence.

Moderate energy intake promotes optimal body constitution and minimises insulin resistance associated with overweight. A high protein level helps to reduce net energy intake and also ensures a continuous and progressive source of glucose. The mixture of low glycaemic index cereals, such as barley and maize, together with the gelling action of Psyllium mucilage, leads to a reduction in postprandial hyperglycaemia.

Chondroprotectants, such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate, play a role in minimising the associated risk of joint disease in the diabetic cat, which is often elderly or overweight.

The insulinotropic activity of arginine facilitates the regeneration of pancreatic activity and reduces the need for exogenous insulin. Lutein and antioxidants help to increase the cat's sensitivity to insulin.
