Stress and anxiety management in dogs and cats:
Faced with unfavourable or dangerous situations, animals generate a series of physiological, psychological and behavioural changes to increase their state of activation in order to cope with this situation: this is stress. When it occurs in a timely manner, stress can be positive and allows to react to situations that require a response, but if it becomes chronic or has an excessive intensity it can trigger health problems at the digestive, behavioural, immune and skin level, among others.
Stress often also generates a certain degree of anxiety, an anticipation of potentially dangerous stimuli, imagined or unknown, which can lead to unwanted reactions such as hyperactivity, rigid posture, urination, destruction of objects or excessive barking and whining. These signs may also be seen in cases of fear, when dogs and cats have a response to stimuli identified as threatening; or phobias, persistent and maladaptive fears that are out of proportion to the triggering stimulus.
The most common causes affecting pet behaviour are separation from the owner, fears of loud noises and the presence of new pets or unfamiliar people. If not managed correctly, these problems cause imbalances and problems, in addition to a reduction in the quality of the bond with humans and an increase in the likelihood of abandonment 3. It is therefore key to immediately identify and correct the stressful situation to minimise suffering and restore the quality of life of dogs, cats and people living with them.
Behaviour is determined by temperament, hormone levels and the experiences the animal has acquired throughout its life. Similarly, the central nervous system is closely connected to the gastrointestinal tract: it is popularly known as the gut-brain axis. In this sense, the influence of stress on the gastrointestinal tract is very clear: threatening situations may cause diarrhoea, vomiting or gut dysbiosis, but the microbiota and the gut also play an important role in maintaining normal psychological and neurological function. Multiple evidence suggests that stress and anxiety can be reduced through modulation of gut flora and diet.
Therefore, mental health management must also take into account gastrointestinal health and the state of the microbiota.
