What is A.A.S. 500 mg tablets and what is it for?

It is a medicine containing acetylsalicylic acid. Depending on its concentration, this active ingredient will have one purpose or another.

In this case, A.A.S. 500 mg is indicated to treat occasional mild to moderate pain and fever.

Who it is intended for

It is recommended for adults and children from 16 years of age.

Instructions for use

This medicine is indicated for oral administration. It is recommended to be taken with water or milk and with meals, especially in those patients who have digestive discomfort. It is not recommended to take it on an empty stomach.

What is the recommended dose?

It is indicated for adults and children from 16 years of age, so the dosage would be 1 tablet every 4 or 6 hours, depending on the intensity of the symptoms.

Up to a maximum of 8 tablets a day.

In other words, it is not advisable to take more than 4 grams of acetylsalicylic acid a day.

Contraindications

  • If you are allergic to acetylsalicylic acid, or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
  • If you have suffered from mastocytosis (generally characterised by urticaria) as severe hypersensitivity reactions (severe exaggerated allergic reaction with flushing, hypotension, tachycardia and vomiting) may occur.
  • If you suffer or have suffered from gastric or duodenal ulcer or repeated gastric discomfort.
  • If you have had asthmatic allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, choking, bronchial spasm and in some cases coughing or wheezing) when taking medicines to reduce inflammation, acetylsalicylic acid, other painkillers, as well as when taking the dye tartrazine.
  • If you have or have ever had asthma or nasal polyps associated with asthma that are caused or increased by acetylsalicylic acid, rhinitis or urticaria.
  • If you suffer from haemophilia or other blood clotting problems that predispose you to internal bleeding, have any other bleeding disease or risk of bleeding.
  • If you are being treated with medicines to promote blood circulation (oral anticoagulants).
  • If you are being treated with methotrexate used at doses higher than 20 mg/week.
  • If you have severe liver failure.
  • If you have severe kidney failure.
  • If you have severe and uncontrolled heart failure.
  • If you are under 16 years of age, unless expressly indicated by a doctor, as the use of acetylsalicylic acid has been linked to Reye's syndrome, a rare but serious disease.
  • If you are in your third trimester of pregnancy (more than 24 weeks gestation), at doses higher than 100 mg/day.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Frequent

  • Respiratory system disorders: rhinitis, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath.
  • Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea and vomiting.

Rare:

  • Blood disorders.
  • Liver disorders: liver toxicity.

The following adverse effects have been observed after prolonged treatment with acetylsalicylic acid, the frequency of which cannot be established with certainty:

  • Gastrointestinal disorders:

  • Fixed rash, itching, accumulation of fluid in skin and mucous membranes, skin reactions.
  • Haemorrhagic syndromes: bruising, urogenital haemorrhage, bleeding from the nose, gums, appearance of red spots on the skin. If a cut or wound occurs, bleeding may take a little longer than normal to stop.
  • Blood disorders: thrombocytopenia (decreased levels of platelets), pancytopenia (decreased white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets), bicytopenia (decreased levels of two types of cells in the blood).(decreased levels of two types of cells in the blood), aplastic anaemia, bone marrow failure, agranulocytosis (decreased levels of granulocytes, a type of white blood cell): a type of white blood cell), neutropenia (decrease in neutrophils: a type of white blood cell) and leukopenia (decrease in white blood cells).
