Nowadays, Spain is a great producer of citrus fruits, especially in the Levante area and some provinces of Andalusia, but what we know today as sweet orange (Citrus x sinensis) is an ancient hybrid called Chinese orange. It is probable that this species arose from Citrus máxima, Citrus reticulata and Citrus medica, like most of the species we know and consume today.
