The CONTOUR XT blood glucose testing system is all about simplicity. You will find that it is very easy to use the first time you see it.

Automatic

You no longer have to worry about coding the meter or marking the control test result. The CONTOUR XT meter is designed with AutoCode TM technology to automatically code itself every time you insert a test strip.

test strip. It will even inform you when a test strip is insufficiently filled.

Programmed

The CONTOUR XT meter is factory set to the standard date and time for your convenience.

The meter is set to display results in mg/dL (milligrams of glucose per deciliter). In some countries the meters are set to display units in mmol/L (millimoles of glucose per litre); mg/dL results never include a decimal point; mmol/L results always include a decimal point.

Method of use

"Always keep the test strips in the original bottle. Close the bottle tightly immediately after removing a test strip. The bottle is designed to keep the test strips dry. Prolonged exposure to moisture

Prolonged exposure to moisture from leaving the bottle open or failure to store the test strips in their original bottle may damage the test strips. This may cause inaccurate test results.

Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before testing.

The test strips are for single use only. Do not use a test strip that appears damaged or has already been used.

The test strip is designed to "soak" blood easily into the sample tip. Do not drop blood directly onto the flat surface of the test strip.

Do not press the test strip against your finger during testing. This may block the sample tip.

Allow the meter and test strips to adjust to the temperature of the location where you are testing.

Whenever you move the meter from one location to another, allow 20 minutes for the meter to adjust to the temperature of the new location before testing your blood glucose. The meter is designed to give accurate results at

temperatures between 5°C and 45°C.

Check the expiry dates on the test strips and control solution. It is important that you do not use the test strips or control solution if the expiry date printed on the bottle label or box has expired. Do not use the control solution if it has been six months since you first opened the bottle. It is a good idea to write the six-month discard date on the control solution label.

Before you begin testing, have all the materials you will need ready. This includes the CONTOUR XT meter, CONTOUR NEXT test strips and the MICROLET 2 lancing device along with the MICROLET lancets. You will also need CONTOUR NEXT control solution for quality control. CONTOUR NEXT control solutions are sold separately.

The MICROLET 2 lancing device is designed for self-testing by a single patient. It should not be used on more than one person due to the risk of infection.

Use a new MICROLET lancet each time you test because it loses sterility after use.

Do not perform a blood glucose test when the CONTOUR XT meter is connected to an external device, e.g. a computer.

Use only equipment approved by the manufacturer or certified entities such as UL or TUV.

Test Strip Preparation

1. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before testing.

2. Remove one CONTOUR NEXT test strip from the vial.

Hold the test strip with the grey end facing up.

4. Insert the grey end into the test strip port of the meter.

The meter turns on. An image of a test strip with a flashing blood drop appears, indicating that the meter is ready to test.

Preparing the lancing device

1. Pull the endcap out of the MICROLET2 lancing device with your thumb over the retaining slot as shown in the illustration.

2. Loosen the round protective cover on the lancet by turning it a quarter turn, but do not remove it. Always use MICROLET lancets to ensure proper functioning.

3. Insert the lancet firmly into the lancing device until it stops. This restarts the lancing device. You can also pull and release the tip to reload the lancing device.

Twist the round protective cover of the lancet to detach it. Keep it for disposal of the used lancet.

5. Replace the grey endcap before drawing the blood drop.

6. The depth of the puncture depends on the setting of the endcap and the pressure applied to the puncture site. You will need to determine which combination is right for you.

Obtaining the blood drop and performing the test

Press the endcap firmly against the puncture site and press the blue release button with your thumb.

2. Massage your hand and finger in the direction of the puncture site so that a drop of blood forms. Do not squeeze the area around the puncture site.

3. Perform the test as soon as the drop of blood has formed.

4. Immediately bring the tip of the test strip into contact with the drop of blood. The blood collects on the test strip through the tip. Keep the tip of the test strip in contact with the drop of blood until the meter beeps.

Do not press the tip against the skin or drop blood onto the surface of the test strip, as this may cause inaccurate results or errors.

If the first drop of blood is not enough, the meter beeps a second time and a picture of a strip that does not have enough blood appears on the screen.

You have 20 seconds to collect more blood on the same test strip. If you cannot collect more blood in this time, error code E2 appears on the display.

error code E2 appears on the display. Discard the used test strips as medical waste and start again with a new strip.

strip.

5. After a beep, the meter starts a 5-second countdown and the blood test result is displayed and automatically stored in the meter's memory. Do not touch the test strip during the countdown as this may cause an error.

6. To turn the meter off, remove the test strip. Dispose of the used test strip as medical waste.
