Utabon is a medicine indicated for the temporary relief of symptoms of nasal congestion and rhinitis, both allergic and associated with common colds. Its formula combines two active ingredients: chlorphenamine maleate and phenylephrine hydrochloride. Chlorphenamine is an antihistamine that helps reduce the symptoms of allergies, such as sneezing and runny nose, while phenylephrine acts as a nasal decongestant, reducing inflammation of the blood vessels in the nose.
Chlorphenamine maleate: the antihistamine
Chlorphenamine maleate is a first-generation antihistamine, which means it blocks the H1 histamine receptors in the body. Histamine is a substance that is released by the body in response to allergens and causes allergy symptoms such as itching, sneezing and runny nose. By inhibiting the action of histamine, chlorphenamine helps to reduce the allergic response and improve the patient's general well-being.
However, this type of antihistamine can cause side effects such as drowsiness, which may be an advantage in some cases if the patient has difficulty sleeping due to congestion.
Phenylephrine is a decongestant that works by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal passages. Nasal congestion occurs when these blood vessels dilate, allowing the nasal lining to swell. Phenylephrine reduces this dilation, which reduces swelling and makes breathing easier. Unlike other decongestants such as pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine has fewer stimulant effects on the central nervous system, making it a safer option for some patients.
Treatment of allergic rhinitis
Utabon is effective in treating the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, a common condition that causes nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes and runny nose in response to allergens such as dust, pollen or dust mites. This medicine is especially useful in relieving the symptoms of seasonal rhinitis (hay fever) and perennial rhinitis.
In addition to its use for allergies, Utabon is also indicated to treat nasal congestion caused by common colds. During colds, the nasal mucosa becomes inflamed due to the body's immune response to viruses. The combination of chlorphenamine and phenylephrine helps to reduce nasal inflammation as well as sneezing and runny nose, providing temporary relief until the body fights off the viral infection.
The mode of administration of Utabon varies depending on the formulation, as it is available in both tablet and nasal spray form. In general, for adults and children over 12 years of age, it is recommended to take one tablet or apply the spray dose every 4 to 6 hours as needed. The recommended daily dose should not be exceeded, as there may be a risk of side effects if the dose is exceeded.
It is important to follow the directions on the package leaflet and not to prolong the use of the medicine longer than necessary. Prolonged use of decongestants may cause a rebound effect, where nasal congestion worsens when the medicine is stopped.
Due to the presence of chlorphenamine, Utabon may cause drowsiness, which may affect the ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. This effect is common with first-generation antihistamines, and caution is important if performing activities that require alertness.
Utabon may interact with other medicines, such as antidepressants, tranquillisers and other antihistamines. Therefore, it is essential to consult a doctor before combining Utabon with other treatments. In addition, it is not recommended for people with high blood pressure, as phenylephrine may increase blood pressure.
