There are many cases in which the use of a breast pump can be very useful. From the relactation to the convenience of being able to save milk for your baby for those moments or days when you can't breastfeed. At Farmaciasdirect we tell you all about it.
Breast pumps are items designed to pump milk from the mother's breast in order to store it. There are both manual breast pumps, in which the milk is pumped by hand using a syringe or pump, and electric breast pumps, which automatically aspirate the milk.
If your baby has difficulty latching on to the breast, as is the case with premature babies, if you produce more milk than your baby can take, or if you have cracked nipples, a breast pump is an excellent alternative to get around the problems while your baby still benefits from the important advantages of breastmilk. Of course, a breast pump is also very useful if you will not be able to breastfeed for a few days due to absence or, for example, because you are on medication.
Manual breast pumps work with a simple suction pump that the mother activates herself, while electric breast pumps, which are much easier to use, especially for first-time breastfeeders, do all the work on their own, usually powered by batteries or rechargeable batteries.
To use a breast pump, you should first wash your hands with soap. If you have sweated or put any cream or product on your breasts or nearby skin, you should also wash them. Rest the breast pump cup on the nipple, or both cups if it is a double pump.
Otherwise, pump one breast first and then the other. Once you have finished expressing, you can either give the milk directly to your baby or store it in the fridge, where it will keep for up to 8 days, or freeze it, keeping it for 2 to 5 months. If you give your baby stored breastmilk, be sure to warm it to your body temperature first. To do this, first thaw it with water and then heat it in a bain-marie, keeping the temperature below 50°C so as not to spoil its composition.
Unless you have breast problems of some kind, the breast pump should not be a complication. In fact, they are useful for getting around many of them that do cause problems with breastfeeding directly.
