What is it and what is it for?

Naturlider dried leaves of Iceland lichen (cetraia islandica) is derived from the symbiosis between an algae and a fungus. It is rich in mucilage which protects internal areas of the body, such as the mucous membranes, and helps to moderate vomiting and nausea. This infusion has mildly laxative, anti-diarrhoeal and moisturising effects. It facilitates the expulsion of bile and mucous secretions. It is very useful for treating and relieving respiratory tract disorders caused by flu, colds, dry coughs and inflammation of the bronchial tubes. It relieves inflammation of the gums and improves the healing of canker sores.

It also stimulates urine production and inhibits retention of body fluids. Applying Iceland lichen as a poultice to the skin soothes sensitive, reactive skin and reduces inflammation, rashes and redness. It has antibacterial properties and effects as a natural antibiotic that inhibits the proliferation of harmful micro-organisms. It is expectorant, analgesic and reduces inflammations of the respiratory tract. It also promotes the recovery process of colds and flus.

On the other hand, it favours intestinal performance and thanks to its slightly bitter taste, it can stimulate appetite and reduce constipation. It is often used as an adjunct treatment for chronic digestive conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, reflux and food poisoning. It helps to soothe minor stomach infections and regulates gastric acid production. Regular consumption of Icelandic lichen tea supports nutrition and digestion.
