Phytosterols and phytostanols, also known as plant sterols, are found naturally in fruits, seeds, leaves and stems. They provide a hypocholesterolemic effect that helps prevent cholesterol from being absorbed in the intestines. Their chemical structure does not allow them to be synthesised by the body.
The intake of cholesterall helps to reduce the plasma level of LDL cholesterol, known as the bad type, and does not modify the levels of HDL, which is the good type.
