The gut is home to the gut microbiota, which consists of more than 100 trillion micro-organisms, such as bacteria, yeasts, fungi and viruses, that stably line the gut wall. These microorganisms are essential for maintaining the balance of the microbiota, which provides various benefits to the human body. For example, one of the key functions of these beneficial micro-organisms is to protect against the invasion of other harmful micro-organisms, such as E. coli or Salmonella, by acting as a protective barrier.

Although the composition of the gut microbiota is usually stable in terms of quantity and diversity, certain situations such as changes in diet, travel or the use of certain drugs can alter it. This is the case with antibiotics, which can eliminate both harmful and beneficial bacteria present in the gut. However, yeasts, such as Saccharomyces boulardii, resist the action of these drugs. This particular yeast has been shown to have beneficial effects, supported by numerous scientific studies.
