Animals affected by Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) show a progressive and irreversible loss of kidney function. The kidneys lose their ability to perform glomerular filtration and excretory function, concentrate urine and maintain adequate electrolyte levels. CKD is more common in older animals and in certain breeds. In dogs there is a greater predisposition in Cocker Spaniels, Terriers, Beagles, Golden Retrievers and Shih-Tzus. In cats there is a higher incidence in Persian, Somali, Himalayan and Abyssinian breeds. An increase in creatinine clearance, sodium excretion and urinary osmolarity has been demonstrated in studies in rodents with renal impairment.
