With few exceptions or because the medical prescription states otherwise, when only an English cane is used, it should be carried on the opposite side of the injury. In this way, the patient will be better supported by unloading the affected limb more effectively. In order to achieve a safer gait, the patient must have good muscle capacity and trunk balance. The height should be adjusted so that the forearm brace does not block the elbow joint. For this purpose, it shall be placed on the posteroproximal part of the forearm at a distance of approximately 5 cm from the elbow joint. There is a wide variety of English walking sticks: integral, with folding elbow pad, anatomical grip... The condition of the tip should be checked frequently, as once the rubber starts to wear out, the risk of falling increases and the walking stick loses grip and therefore stability.
